Maya Marshak

PhD Student

I am a food researcher, activist and part-time illustrator. I am passionate about the role that transforming the food system can play in the future and working towards social and environmental justice. I have recently started an interdisciplinary PhD at UCT and am being supervised by Rachel Wynberg. The PhD is connected to the Seed and Knowledge project at UCT and the Genok Agricultures Project in Norway and will be focused on mapping maize seed systems. My background is in urban food security and I am enthusiastic about this project because it takes me out of the city to engage with other parts of the food system. I am also excited to be taking classes in the Environmental Humanities Programme at UCT which offers new avenues for creative approaches of engaging with and producing academic environmental work. I feel this can offer stimulating avenues for engaging with research around seed sovereignty and GMOs.
