Reviving orphan crops in the Eastern Cape
Supervisors: Dr Laura Pereira and Assoc Prof Rachel Wynberg
I completed my Masters in the Climate Change and Sustainable Development Programme of the African Climate and Development Initiative at UCT. My background involves an undergraduate Degree in Ecology and Zoology from the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg and an Honours year in the Department of Biological Sciences at UCT. In my final undergraduate and Honours years I focused on modelling and systems thinking with a primary interest in landscape ecology. After Honours, with projects in fynbos connectivity and phytoplankton biomass modelling, my interests began to shift. By the end of my Honours year an interest in socio-economic issues related to climate change, development and social justice emerged, as well as the goal of making a tangible contribution to the improvement of people’s lives and the environment. With widespread practical and theoretical problems facing South Africa in terms of development, poverty and vulnerability, my research interests have tended towards rural agricultural development and sustainability. I am driven to work on projects which will move South Africa, and society, towards a resilient, equitable and just future. Personally, in whatever free time is available, I can be found reading novels, knitting or running on a mountain.
